Poetry: English at its Finest

As is perhaps evident by this point, I have quite a knack for writing essays. As such, I have always had some fascination with poetry as well. One of my favorite poets is Robert Frost. His poetry evokes such great imagery that one cannot help but be drawn in to what he is saying.

Poetry offers a unique challenge that goes beyond simply writing a blog.

For a blog, the only thing you really need to keep in mind is how engaging it is for your audience. You don’t have to worry about sentence structure as much. Your only worry is to get your reader to understand what you are trying to say in the same way that you mean it.

This contrasts with poetry, where you also have to pay attention to the specific rhythm and beat count of each line. There are exceptions to this, but this is the general rule.

In this blog, it is not my goal to share with you the intricate details of writing poetry, as that is not my field of expertise. What I want to do is share with you some of the poems that I have written over the years as well as the history behind them. I will split this into two parts, splitting them into my earlier poems and my later ones.

Down Under the Covers

This is the first poem that I ever recall making. I got the inspiration when I was in 5th grade while lying in bed listening to a winter storm outside. This is a fond one for me, and I think you will enjoy it as well.

Monday-Friday
Down under the covers:
All cozy and warm;
Down under the covers:
That stupid alarm!

Down under the covers:
Mom’s yelling, “Get up!”
Down under the covers:
Will this ever let up?

Saturday
Down under the covers:
All cozy and warm;
Down under the covers:
Outside there’s a storm!

Down under the covers…
What? No school today?
Then under the covers
Is where I will stay.

I Am

This one is certainly one of my favorite poems that I have written.

The story behind this one is that I got the inspiration while sitting in church one Sunday evening in October 2018.

The subtitle reads, “A short poem for affirmation.”

I am peace;
I seek not revenge.
I am love;
I will not hate.

I am hope;
I look to the future.
I am faith;
I know I can.

I am truth;
I will not lie.
I am compassion;
I will care for you.

I am humble;
You cannot anger me.
I am pride
Yet am not arrogance.

I am creative;
I’ll try new things.
I am humor;
You may laugh at me.

I am dependable;
You can count on me.
I am trust;
Tell me your secrets.

I am persistence;
I will never quit.
I am determination;
You cannot stop me.

I am success;
You cannot outlast me.
I am the best;
You cannot outdo me.

I am courage;
I fear nothing.
I am strength;
You cannot move me.

I am rock solid;
You cannot shake me.
I am ENOUGH;
I don’t care what you say.

10th Grade Literature

In 10th grade, we had a literature class, which was the spark that rekindled my interest in writing poetry. I wrote a few poems as a part of an assignment we were given. The following poem is my favorite of these. It is a haiku, and displays an incredibly vivid, picturesque use of the English language, and I am quite proud of it.

Lion, a Haiku

Lying in the sun,
With all majestic beauty,
The mighty lion.

The two following poems were also ones that I wrote in 10th grade. “Talents” is one that I submitted to be included in a booklet of our class’s poems. I wrote “You can do It” not long after. The latter is perhaps the “weakest” of my poems so far, in my opinion. It’s cliche as hell and is more of a generic personal development poem.

Talents

I have many talents
And things that I can do.
Some of them are private,
And some I’ll share with you.

First, I play piano.
I love to play its tunes
While all its rapturous music
Sends shivers through my bones.

Next, I like to build.
I know more than one trick.
I’ve used LEGO and wood,
But never have used brick.

Third, I like to write.
I really think I’m swell.
I think I’m better at it
Than talking very well.

Next, I like to learn.
I really like to read.
Many leaders use reading
To help them to succeed.

I have many talents,
Though I’ve only named a few.
There’s no telling my potential
Or the things that I could do.

You might think you’re worthless,
With nothing to pursue,
But you do have many talents
Buried inside of you.

You have many talents.
I don’t know what they are,
But until you rightly use them,
You won’t get very far.

So go use your talents.
Be who you’re meant to be.
Don’t let others tell you
You weren’t born to succeed.

Go into the world
And play your whole part.
You were born to win.
I believe that with all my heart.

You can do It

You can do anything
If you really try.
Some people will say,
“I’ll do it or die.”

But others will say,
“I’m not good enough.”
They say to themselves,
“I don’t have the stuff.”

Careful what you say.
Your mind always hears.
You may not have thought
That your mind has its ears.

Self-talk is crucial
For any success.
You must always say
That you are the best.

Most people don’t think
That they can do it.
They try for some time,
And then they just quit.

You’ve got to stick through
The good and the bad.
There’s a time to laugh
And a time to be sad.

It does not matter
Where you are right now.
You will have your ups,
And you’ll have your downs.

Just say, “I’ll never
Give up or give in.
I know in my heart
That I was born to win.”

So, hold your head high
E’n if you get hit.
The people who fail
Are the people who quit.

Don’t ever give up,
And if you don’t stop,
I will definitely
See you at the top.
