In the past few months, I have become increasingly aware of the unconscious state in which most people live their lives. I once heard that 2% of people think, 3% of people think that they think, and 95% of people would rather die than think.
The 95% would rather be told what to think and how to live. Their lives are completely run on programs, habits, and preconditioning. Their motto is “ignorance is bliss.” Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance is deadly. Ignorance will not exempt you from a problem because “I didn’t know it was coming.” Hosea 6:4 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” The people of Israel had “Ignorance is bliss” as their motto.
The 3% are one step ahead, yet they are still a little behind. They are open to thinking, yet they’re still primarily governed by the habits that they’ve set up. They evaluate the surface level of what they do. The question what and how they do things, as opposed to going deeper and questioning why.
In the second movie of “The Matrix” trilogy, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus see Merovingian. Their dialogue is most interesting. Here’s part of it:
Morpheus: You know why we’re here.
Merovingian: I am a trafficker of information. I know everything I can. The question is: do YOU know WHY you are here?
Morpheus: We are looking for the Keymaker
Merovingian: Oh, yes, it is true; the Keymaker, of course. But this is not a REASON; this is not a WHY. The Keymaker himself, his very nature, is a means, not an end. And so, to look for him is to be looking for a means to do… what?
Neo: You know the answer to that question.
Merovingian: But DO YOU? You THINK you do, but you DO NOT. You are here because you were SENT here. You were TOLD to come here and you OBEYED. It is, of course, the way of all things. You see, there is only one constant, one universal. It is the only real truth: Causality. Action, reaction. Cause, effect.
Morpheus: Everything begins with choice.
Merovingian: No! Wrong! Choice is an illusion created between those with power and those without… Our only hope – our only peace – is to understand it, to understand the WHY… Why is the only real source of power. Without it you are powerless. And this is how you come to me: without WHY, without power, another link in the chain.
What the Merovingian was trying to tell them was that they were not really thinking. They were part of the 3% who think they think. They were only following orders instead of taking that order and thinking about what it meant to them and why they should carry it out.
This begs the question, “Why do you do what you do?” Is what you’re doing something you chose to do, or is it something you do because you “have to.” Are you really doing what you really want to do with your life? At the very least, are you working towards the point where you can start doing what you want to do? Is what you are doing something that someone told you you had to do? You don’t have to be doing you dream work right now, just so long as you have a goal in mind and what you’re doing is a stepping stone towards that.
One of my favorite quotes from Jim Rohn is, “Make sure what you do is the product of your own conclusion.” Don’t just do what someone else says. Think about what someone suggests and make your own decision. Question everything. If the government says you must wear a mask, question it, research both sides, then make your own decision based on the evidence you’ve found, whether it’s for or against it. The same applies for everything – guns, vaccines, GMO food, history, religion, etc.
The point is: think for yourself. Find your why. Once you know why you do what you do, you can use that to influence others. Like Simon Sinek said, “People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it.” Once you know why you are here and are solid in your belief of who you truly are, you can endure anything that comes your way. You can weather any storm. You will realize that the sky is only the limit if that is what you believe.
